Artist Statement
I am a sculptor of meticulously-crafted fine art bronze pieces which are heavily influenced by my personal history. Today, I am healthy, but that hasn’t always been the case. In fact, my life can easily be divided into ‘before’ and ‘after.’ Before, I was a Yale graduate, business manager, and successful teacher. But everything got a lot tougher for me about 10 years ago when I contracted a hard-to-identify illness that utterly depleted my energy and lifeforce. Afterwards, I was subject to years of hospital visits and tests, declining physical health, and corresponding damage to my mental health. Though my doctors ultimately cured my physical wounds, I was still left with horrible anxiety and depression. In time, it was embracing my passion for art that gave me the courage to use this second chance, if you will, to work through my mental health challenges. Thanks to my family, my art instructors at First City Art Center and Pensacola State College, and advanced research in Treatment Resistant Depression, I feel reborn, rejuvenated, and excited for the next step in my path.
For me the choice of medium is simple. Bronze sculptures are time capsules. Born from fire and molten metal, they survive the harshest of elements for millennia, withstanding all that Mother Nature has to bear. Consequently, I know my work will endure well beyond my lifetime. Also, I feel great accomplishment when I am able to have my hand in every step of the process - from sculpting in clay, mold-making, bronze casting, chasing (grinding), and patina (color application). My pieces are sculpted in downtown Pensacola, featured in collections across the southeastern United States, and have appeared in many gallery shows in Pensacola. I plan to teach sculpture classes beginning 2026.
